The biggest Myth in Bollywood : The 100 crore club…
youtube.com |
Remember the good old times when we bought tickets in
“BLACK” from the goons near the theatres? Bigger the movie, higher the cost.
The Rate of these tickets in black was sometimes even 100 times the actual
cost!
I still remember I bought the tickets for Rangeela back in
1995 for a freaking 400 Rs! The actual cost was Rs. 60 at the Eros theatre,
Churchgate, Mumbai… At the age of 12, Rs 400 was a pretty huge amount back in
1995!!
But those were the good old days! The single screen era.
Every penny spent on the tickets was worth it…
Cut to 2017… Gone are the days of single screen theatres. We
now live in the age of multiplexes. 7 screens in a single theatre. And guess
what, there is no black ticketing here.
You know why? Because the cost of the tickets is freaking
steep. I recently saw Golmaal 4 (Still wondering why), and that is when I
decided to write this.
I feel the people selling tickets in black those days were
better movie critics. They knew exactly which movie is going to work and which
is not. They priced the tickets accordingly.
Now, it is so simple for a movie to enter the so called “100
Crore Club”
The population has gone up, the living standards have gone
up, the expectations have gone up. But as a viewer, our sense and sensibilities
have gone worse.
Get this… These are a few of the recent past multi 100 crore
bagger movies:
Sr No

Now I have not sorted the above table on the collection. I
have not sorted them at all…
It is just not worth our time!
Answer this : HOW MANY OF THESE MOVIES CAN WE ACTUALLY CALL
WORTHY OF IT?
In my view (Purely Mine) – NONE!
If Something like a Tubelight or JHMS can cross 120 Cr, we
are sure living in crazy times.
Now look at this table:

Secret Superstar

Take your time… Let that sink in!
Done?
Do you understand the point that I am trying to make?
If given a choice to, which one would you watch right now?
Jab Harry Met Sejal OR Hindi Medium?
Tubelight OR Newton?
Golmaal 4 or Naam Shabana?
Avoid it all you want… but as an audience, we have lost or
sense of good movies!
If our official entry to the Oscars (Newton) makes a collection
which is 15% of the collection of the biggest flop of the year (JHMS), there is
something terribly wrong with us!
What does JHMS have that a Newton does not have?
Take Parched… What a masterpiece! Every scene is a pleasure
to watch. Radhika, Suvreen and Tannishtha make it a feat to watch.
And how much does it earn?
On the other hand, Judwaa 2 earns 200+ crores.
I have nothing against Varun Dhawan as an actor. He has
proved his acting skills in Badlapur and shown us he can act.
But did something like a Judwaa 2 really deserve a 200+ Cr
collection?
Let alone Judwaa 2, the original Judwa was a dud when it
comes to content and cinema. There was no point in making a remake!!
I know Bhai fans are going to be after my life after reading
this, just like the Karni Sena is after Bhansali and Deepika!
But the fact remains that however and how much ever we run
away from and avoid the facts, we are promoting bad cinema.
Every other day I have discussions and arguments with
friends on why we don’t produce Hollywood quality movies.
Simple… We are emotional!
Our movie selections are similar to our government selection...
Based on religion and emotions.
Bhai Fans go to watch his films just to ensure it earns more
than a SRK one. Same with SRK fans!
Tubelight was for me the worst Salman Khan has come up with.
And FAN for SRK.
Fan was basically Darr with SRK playing SRK, Sunny Deol and
Juhi Chawla.
But we still help them make 120+ crores!
Hollywood, on the other hand shows the door to poor cinema
right away.
I guess it is time we start appreciating good cinema.
The industry is a business at the end of the day. It will
keep churning out what we show them we like.
There is a crop of directors that want to think beyond the
set norms of the industry and nepotism to ensure good cinema is delivered.
Anurag Kahsyap and gang started have their production house
as the established ones did not allow them to make movies they believed in.
And look what they have achieved… Queen, Ugly, NH10,
Hunterr, Masaan, Udta Punjab, Trapped…
They are coming up with many more!
Keep an eye on them.
Let’s make the deserving ones earn not only the accolades
but also the moolah.
Time to wake up and smell the green tea!
Ciao
